February Meeting

February 3, 2025 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Jim Pochert – Ply Split Weaving, History & Techniques

Jim was born in 1952 in Kentucky, where my father was in the army. Subsequently I grew up in Michigan.

My fiber journey began in the late 1980’s, when my family and I moved to Grand Rapids. I found a friendship bracelet in a mall parking lot and wondered how it was made. Utilizing library books I found out (macrame) and also learned about other techniques, including tablet weaving, which I enjoyed. I learned about ply splitting at a lecture at the library, by Peter Collingwood. He was in Grand Rapids teaching a weaving class in Rockford. I took a ply splitting class at the Atlanta Convergence in the late 1990’s and have been doing it since.

Other fiber crafts I’ve done include sprang, frame loom weaving, braiding, making pineapple knots, and  beading.
